Sundays, 10 am to 1pm
May 11: Sage, songs & stories
May 18: Mugwort, songs & stories
You are welcome to participate in a light cold-food pot luck after the workshop.
Topanga Earth Days sponsored <free> Plant Healing Workshops are scheduled for May 11 & 18. Take this opportunity to learn about the natural world that surrounds us in the light of local native wisdom and culture. Cecilia Garcia was educated by her grandparents in the direct and deep lineage of the Chumash heritage. She is a superb communicator and inspired inspirer. Healing is more than a plant, it is a process and a participation. You will learn about the plants, and the songs, stories, dance and spirit that are integrally intertwined in Chumash culture & healing. We learn and we heal as we connect with plants, nature and our community, deepening our roots and participating in the renewal of our selves and our native culture. Please bring your Elderberry Clapper, rattle, or at least a pair of sticks to join the rhythm & song.
Last weekend's Elderberry Clapper Workshop was amazing! More than just making an instrument, the workshop restored us all to a child's purity, simplicity, wonder and creativity. At the same time, it was a vehicle to learn with our hands and hearts an intimate lesson in authentic native culture through making and playing with the main instrument and the rhythms of the Chumash. This was intertwined with stories of origin, animal parables, chanting songs, dancing, and 'finding the center' as we clapped the elderberry branches that we cleaned and decorated. There was a steaming gourd of healing herbs infusing the room, herbs in our headbands, paint on our faces, and smiling in our heart.
Cecilia Garcia is a Chumash Healer who was educated in healing by her grandparents. She has practiced Chumash healing her entire life. She continues to share her knowledge and healing and she is co-author with James D. Adams, Jr. (Prof. Of Pharmacology, USC) of the authoritative book "Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West: cultural and scientific basis for their use" (2005).
Ted Garcia is a story teller, song leader and sculptor. He is a respected Bear and the hereditary chief and family spokesman of the southern band Chumash & Tongva people.
