Fabulous Local Hangout
I respectfully disagree with the reviewer who complained about sullen service from pseudo-hipsters. She must have been there in a rare "off" moment. I have been to Aroma dozens of times and have never received anything but warm, friendly service from everyone, from the manager right down to the bus people who bring your food to your table. The menu is clever and creative, with lots of fun options for both breakfast and lunch, and the baked goods are so beautiful they practically wave at you from behind the glass. I don't find the coffee any better than at other coffee places, to be honest, but it's perfectly fine, certainly not sub-par. Above all, the thing I love most about Aroma is the atmosphere. The restaurant and bookstore are situated in what used to be an ordinary 1940's-era "Valley traditional" house, now artfully festooned with foliage, furniture and fascinating objects to look at. The seating starts in the main room where you place your order, then continues outside to a series of patios encircling the house, each with its own particular ambiance. Walking through, you "discover" each patio like it's a whole new world. Smokers use the south side patio; dog owners cluster there and also at the the front sidewalk tables under the red umbrellas. Something for everyone. I love the back patio myself, with its abundance of chirping birds. When I bring guests, they are amazed at how lovely it is and also how warm, cozy and intimate the vibe is. If all you want is an inexpensive meal, then there are plenty of other places that will make you feel you got better value. But I find the prices quite reasonable because I go to Aroma for the experience.
