A profoundly moving experience
A group of us went to the Ashes and Snow exhibit at the Santa Monica pier yesterday. I heard nothing but praise for this installation before it even opened, and after experiencing it last night I must say it more than lived up to my (very high) expectations.

It is profoundly moving, and utterly mesmerizing. It is simply something that everyone must see and experience for themselves, because words will not do it justice. It is an incredible synthesis of stunning images (still and moving), ambient music, and sustainable architecture. The artist’s message about the harmonious existence between people and animals, while simple, is important, vital and presented in a spectacular way without being overly didactic.

Here is the artist's mission statement:

“In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals. The images depict a world that is without beginning or end, here or there, past or present.”

—Gregory Colbert, Creator of Ashes and Snow

I feel as if my first visit only scratched the surface: the film itself is an hour, along with the short films and all of those huge, wonderful still photos. My sense is that Ashes and Snow rewards multiple viewings; trying to take it all in within the space of a single visit is somewhat overwhelming. I’m looking forward to my return visit; hopefully I can bring more of my friends to join me! - Daniel , posted 02/25/06
