If there was a 0 for a rating, this place would get it. They are overpriced, rude, and don't care at all for animals. I called after my cat has emergency surgery because we had a problem with his (cat) catheter and we were put on hold for 15 minutes, I finally hung up and called back and was put on hold another 15 minutes!! The service is HORRIBLE...go anywhere but here...trust me - liz , posted 03/02/08 |

My Matlese had a seizure, foaming at the mouth. Beverly Oaks was the nearest vet and they said they had "emergency service". I parked and carried my limp dog in my arms to the front desk. They turned us away because we weren't a regular customer. We had just moved to Sherman Oaks and just hadn't looked for a new vet yet. We had to drive one hour over the hill to West LA - to our old vet - to have her treated. Luckily she survived. We're now looking to permanently switch to a local vet. There's NO WAY I'll go back to Beverly Oaks, even though it's walking distance from my house. They don't seem to care about animals at all. At least their front desk didn't care. - phyllis , posted 01/24/08 |

Koa (2 month old kitten) ate too much can food with Salmon oil. An hour after eating it she started getting really sick (throwing up and foaming at the mouth), afraid of dehydration I took her to Beverly Oak Emergency even though I should know better. They wanted me to sign a piece of paper saying I’d agree to pay a bill of $732.00 to START treatment. I was furious to say the least ...I said, “you haven’t even seeing the cat and you’re asking me all these tests not even knowing what emergency she has?” ----I crossed $530.00 of the bill and asked them to put some fluids on her and give her some medication to prevent vomiting. I wanted to get her stabilized until 7:30AM when I could rush her to Dr. Steve at VMC who has treated all my pets. I'm an animal behaviorist for 23 years and I've around sick pets thousands of time, I knew all she had was a bad stomachache. The attitude this Beverly Oaks gave me was absurd ...first when they saw I wasn’t going to pay the starting fee, they never put us in a examination room; secondly when they brought her out (through the reception) I was asked to wait and the doctor was going to come and speak to us. His speech was “spacey” (almost like he was high) and said she probably had some spinal injury. I said “WHAT?” ....she never fell from anything! Well ....she seems tender on her back (which she was NOT at that point) and I should give her baby aspirin and pepto-bismol when I got home. On the way home she seemed to be getting worse (now screaming and twitching) ....to make a long story short, she never stopped SCREAMING until 3:45AM with agonizing pain. At 1:30AM I called the Vet to ask him if the injections he gave her could make her sore since she clearly was in pain ....do you know what he said to me? Here is the conversation: Doctor: -- “Well ...no, those injections shouldn't make her scream like that”.... Me: --”Doctor, she’s worse now comparing to when I brought her to you ....before she had nausea and severe stomachache ...now she’s in excruciating pain! Something is wrong here.” Doctor: -- “Hummm ...yeah her case is very strange ....I gave the same pain medication to another cat and he’s not screaming ....maybe she’s just a drama queen, I don’t know.” Me: -- “Are you telling me that a 2 month old kitten screaming in pain is a drama queen, doctor?” Doctor: --- “yeah, it could be. If you want you can bring her back and we can X-Ray her like we intended from the beginning” At 7:30AM she was rushed into my normal Vet who diagnosed her with an overdose of reglan (anti-vomiting medication). She's still in treatment and I'm praying she won't have permanent neurological side effect due to an incompetent doctor. - Teka Ludovico , posted 09/25/07 |

My husband and I have taken our animals to Beverly Oaks for 10 years. We now live by the L.A. Airport and have STILL gone all the way to Sherman Oaks in an emergency. Over the years, we have known our share of heartaches and dramas at Beverly Oaks. We would not take a critically ill animal anywhere else. Are they expensive? You bet they are - EVERY vet with state of the art facilities is expensive. They are prepared to do so much more in the way of diagnostics than your average animal hospital and the equipment and procedures they follow are on par with the best hospitals. We all know how expensive good medical care has become. Why should a veterinarian be cut-rate? Do you really want that kind of attention for your pet? It is ridiculous to demand that any doctor make a correct diagnosis the first time, every single time with a patient who cannot communicate to them and an owner who says, "Fluffy is feeling oogy". Those tests are what makes the diagnosis and the tests don't come cheap anywhere. Also, we have not found their rates to be high for non-critical care. We are also aware that they have periods of delay at the facility. We have been the perpetrators of such delay a few times when every able-bodied person threw themselves into trying to save one of our various pets. No effort was spared. We have seen nothing but kindness, compassion, sensitivity, and complete competence through some of the worst situations we have ever known. I thank God for Dr. Laurel Leach and her wonderful team. - Sandra , posted 08/12/07 |

Horrible. I had an appointment at 6:00 for a simple vaccination. They didn't get me in until almost 7:00. Then the Vet checked out my dog and told me to wait in the exam room for the vaccination. I waited for another hour, listening to employees laugh and joke around in the hallway and accept walk-ins without hesitation. When I went out to ask what was taking so long, they finally gave my dog the shot. Then, instead of apologizing, they made up excuses about having a bunch of emergencies, even though I could tell that wasn't true based on the hallway activity I'd been hearing. They totally forgot about me, but decided to invent excuses instead of admitting a mistake. They are slow, arrogant, and expensive. I recommend finding an alternative. - Chris , posted 05/29/07 |

I used to live around the corner, so this was a no-brainer. They know my dog, and she has some issues, so I keep her there and make the drive from SIlver Lake. The 24/7 aspect is great, and the vet techs are very nice, but it's DAMN pricey--as much as 40% more than other reputable vets. I'll probably take my pet to the Larchmont vet, but this one has always given me good, if expensive, service. - Cormac , posted 12/23/06 |

I have never had a better experience with a vet in LA. From the moment we brought our cat in 2 mos. ago, to tonight, when we finally had to put our beloved guy to sleep, Dr. Leach and her staff where compassionate, caring and went above and beyond their dury to help him. Dr. Leach had no problem suggesting we get other opinions and was open to all of our suggestions and questions. The staff remembered him when we came in, and gave him immediate attention during emergencies. I do a lot of rescue, and I'm very picky about my vets. This is a very busy office, and can understand when they can't call right back unless it's an emergency, but when it counted they were there. Dr. Leach never suggested unnecessary tests or treatments, and her prices were the same if not less than other vets I have driven far further to see. They gave him the best care possible at the end until we could arrive the be with him, and then helped him pass peacfully. I don't think we could ask for more. - D , posted 11/24/06 |

Dr. Leach is my favorite. I've had them for many years and they've always provided great service. Open 24/7. Pricy, though. - Paul , posted 12/22/07 |

Prepare to empty your wallet here for expensive tests, and then expect to never hear back from them (unless the answer means they can charge you for more tests). If there's something actually wrong with your pet, they will either mis-diagnose the problem, or tell you they don't know what is wrong and refer you to a specialist. They're rude, are very difficult to get information from, and never return phone calls when they promise. Don't get fooled by their prominent location on Ventura in Sherman Oaks - they are a waste of money and precious time. - Justin , posted 10/26/06 |

I adopted a Persian cat that was neutered by Doctor E. Hayashi at this hospital. The rescue lady uses this Vet, not me. I just picked up the cat here, and counted on an HONEST exam from this Vet. The cat was released to me, and within a couple of days I was at my vet with a sick cat. He had a temperature of 102.9, and an upper respiratory infection. I understand these two things can happen after being neutered. He also had an eye infection, gingivitis, and dirty black ears. I treated all of these problems without a complaint. Within 2 weeks I broke out with ringworm. My cat also had a bad case of ringworm! I called Beverly Oaks animal hospital, and spoke to a receptionist who pulled the cats chart and told me that all it said was..."neuter". I started treating the ringworm but it became widespread on me and my environment. I encurred 1,000.00 dollars just in vet bills, more in dermotogist bills, cleaning supplies...major damages. The rescue lady took no reponsibility, and came up with an exam record from the doctor claiming that he checked his teeth stating they were normal, coat was normal, ears were normal and so on. How can this be true or ethical? Does gingivitis happen overnight? My cat cannot chew!!! My Vet saw him within a couple of days after I picked him up from the Beverly Oaks Animal Hospital. DISGRACEFUL. - Kimberly , posted 09/20/06 |

In my 30+ years as a pet owner, this is the worst experience I have ever had with a vet. I took my dog for emergency care and after 3 days of hospitalization and numerous intrusive diagnostic tests costing thousands of dollars, these vets had no idea what was wrong with my dog, wanted to do exploratory surgery and eventually gave me a completely wrong diagnosis. They were inexperienced, rude, dismissive of my suggestions and combative in response to my questions -- they told me nothing except that they needed to do more expensive tests. I had to beg them in tears to be nice to me because my dog was dying. As soon as I could (it was after-hours on the weekend), I took my dog to a wonderful vet -- Dr. Richard Martin of Brentwood Pet Clinic who, in 10 minutes, diagnosed what Beverly Oaks couldn't diagnose after 3 days -- it was a problem with my dog's heart and Dr. Martin referred me to an amazing cardiologist, Dr. Sarah Zimmerman of Advanced Veterinary Care Center in Lawndale, who could not save my dog, but who provided her with the best medical care and provided me with the utmost respect, comfort and kindness. Stay away from Beverly Oaks -- do not subject your pet or yourself to their horrible treatment. - kathy , posted 06/22/06 |

I've been taking my funky little Persian cat Pumpkin to the Beverly Oaks Animal Hospital for several years now. They are great, the staff is friendly and informed, and we never have a hard time. They mail out vaccination reminders, have a vaccination clinic on certain days, and they are located next door to the Beverly Oaks Pet Resort, which also handles grooming and adoptions. Stop by one day when you're feeling down and the cats they have for adoption will certainly cheer you up! - Kevin , posted 11/02/04 |
