Snobby, but still good
A film wall organized by director. . .a whole section devoted to Blacksploitation films. . .snobby and irreverent, Cinefile is staffed by movie-lovers and perused by people with eccentric, esoteric tastes. Very useful resource for West LA. - Unsubscribed , posted 12/29/05

Maybe the best movie joint in L.A.
The only other place with a better selection would be Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee, but they have funky hours and rental fees. This and Scarecrow Video in Seattle are the two best video stores on the west coast. - Cam , posted 07/24/05

for the serious moviegoer
aside from having an enormous selection, it's the sheer diversity of choices that make it an LA notable. i've found next to everything here - and my tastes can get obscure and frustrating to say the least. plus, the people who work there are fun, and hadrian (the manager) is a true movie fan dedicated to getting virtually every movie he can possibly obtain. - Unsubscribed , posted 11/01/04

For the off beat movie connoisseurs
I'm a full on movie freak and Cinefile is one of the few spots that I can turn to when I'm in need of one of my weird or off-beat flicks. The staff is pretty keen on what's happening so they can help the novice or aspiring film enthusiast.

The have a rough and sturdy collect of truly odd films that you unlikely to find anywhere else. - Ranxerox , posted 09/10/04

the best of the best when it comes to cinema
This is the video store of video stores. It has anything and everything. And if they don't, ask them and they just might be able to find it for you. An amazing selection that blows Blockbuster and every other chain out of the water. - Eddie , posted 08/31/04

"It's cheaper than film school."
Film junkies, unite, converge, and make merry...

If you can visit Cinefile and walk away empty-handed, you probably don't like movies. I just picked up the Michel Gondry music video and short film collection yesterday (for like, $15 bucks) and reminded myself of what a pleasure this store is.

Aside from the endlessly entertaining catagories (i.e. "actors direct, or what i really want to do is...") that the shelves are organized into, it's just amazing the depth of movies availible. Cinefile lives up to it's namesake in a great big 'Tarantino-esque' way. Out of print, out of region (they even sell all region DVD players), out of the loop cinema, all begging to be rented by you.

And you can buy almost anything on the shelves, yes, even the rental copies. I couldn't find "Chinese Odyssey 2002" anywhere else, and they happily sold me their only copy for under $20 bucks. Wow.

Credit where credit's due: Tribester Violet June Faire first convinced me to check it out, even though it's walking distance, I had never ventured in...

next door to the NuArt Theatre, around the corner from Lulu's blue plate...
