I finally found a dentist I can stick with!!!
finding a good dentist is as hard as finding an honest mechanic, except it's your mouth and you dont' get to buy a new set of teeth if you choose the wrong one for major work. All you have to go on is your instincts, and because of that I find that the reason I decide to try out a dentist is about as arbitrary as buying wine by the prettiness of the label.
After a particularly traumatic experience trying out my bf's dentist (he insisted on doing work to more teeth than I even have and I almost threatened to sue after all the unnecessary work he did left me in so much pain I couldn't eat solid food anymore), then trying my best friend's dentist who was as indifferent to my teeth as the other dentist was overzealous) I stopped turning to my friend's for dentist's recommendations.
stuck without a dentist and then having a filling fall out (thanks again to sheisty dentist #1) I found Dr. Harrison through a website called yelp.com which people use more for rating restaurants than doctors. There were maybe less than 5 dentists that were recommended at all and he happened to have the most reviewers (two.) That was more to go on than anyone else I could find on the internet and I was desperate at this point so I called for an appointment.
His office is staffed by an incredibly helpful and attentive staff. The first appointment was very thorough (full oral exam, x-rays, dental cleaning) and what I loved about them is the way that they explain everything to you before they do it and while they are working on your teeth. The equipment and office is modern and they have a small camera hooked up to a video monitor to show you snapshots of what the problem areas look like. The hygienist gave me a flossing lesson and a little 101 on plaque. Then Dr. Harrison came in and went over all my x-rays with me and explained what was going on with EACH tooth and why he was recommending what he was recommending.
Coming back to his office, it was nice to see that he always does all the work himself. I know with HMO dentists, almost anybody in the office can and will work on your teeth so it's hard to establish a relationship with any one of them. Dr. Harrison makes it a point to do all the work himself so there is consistency in your dental care and familiarity with your personal needs. After only 3 visits I feel like he's been my dentist from childhood, he's that reassuring.
Considering his office is in Brentwood, I can't imagine he'd be cheap without insurance, but neither would any dentist worth his salt. I have Delta dental and he is a Delta provider, along with Blue Cross and others. His scheduling and billing staff are one of the friendliest most helpful staff I've met and if you're confused about what's covered, they'll help explain all that to you when you're there.
Hopefully you've found this review to be helpful and if you have any specific questions, give him a call or feel free to send me a message.
