Love It for It's Quirks (That's Where The Quality Is)
Mediocre food, overdone decor, waitresses in big floral dresses, drunk folks (from hollywood?)- but I love it for exactly what it is. Used to be much cheaper- my parents used to eat out here (and pretty much only here) back in the 80's. Bring some friends, sit out on the patio, or squeeze into a big red booth, order a margarita and some blue corn tamales, and enjoy. - sarah , posted 07/02/07

Who told you to go to El Coyote for the food?
Only tourists and new-in-town-wannebe-scenesters would think to dine at El Coyote - and if they served margaritas on airplanes, this is how they'd taste - but you go because you must, because it's an institution, like Musso's, or Phillipe's or the post office for that matter. It does what it does better than anyone else. So stop whining and order a pitcher already! - counterzoom , posted 05/03/06

gross
El Coyote's fare is boring, blah, yuck...nothing really going on that excited me in the slightest, not even the drinks. Who came up with the novel idea of pairing warm tasteless salsa with chips? That in and of itself is wrong. To sum it up, El Coyote is a cheap restaurant catering to the hollywood crowd and/or people who don't know or perhaps value the taste of excellent authentic mexican food. If a restaurant doesn't have good food I don't care how strong the drinks are, I'm out. - Julie , posted 07/25/05

Oh please!
Everything is 'standard standard standard' at this overrated Mexican establishment sure to always have a line of faux-hipsters and even more faux-industry types outside. What are they waiting for? Pretty normal margaritas and unchallenging cuisine served in a cheesy, loud, and crowded environment. If this is your idea of fun times, then by all means, jam your car into the parking lot for the valet (as there is no such thing as free parking west of La Brea anymore) and get in line. - Sherrie , posted 06/14/05

Great for drinks, otherwise it stinks!
el Coyote excels in serving extremely under average food while being extremely over rated. Go here for the great drinks and the scene. Otherwise, run for the border for a meal. - onlineZenbobway , posted 03/25/05

A Los Angeles Institution
Anybody who doesn't like the food at this venerable Mexican eatery has obviously never tried the tacos - FANTASTIC! And you've GOTTA try one of their rockin' margaritas to wash down your #1 combo. While you're waiting for your table, say hi to Donna in the bar - get a drink while you wait and enjoy some of the best people-watching in town. She, and many of the other staff, have been serving it up for decades. - Brendan , posted 10/28/04

Food? Who cares? It's all about the margaritas!
This place has been in L.A. for around 60 years and has never gone out of fashion. Inexpensive drinks, and a great (if somewhat cheesy) atmosphere make this the perfect place to meet for happy hour. The food is not exactly authentic Mexican (um, canned beets and peas in the salad?) but once you've been there, you understand why no one cares. If you've got friends in from out of town, it's usually good for a celebrity siting or two as well. - Niki , posted 08/31/04

Mexican Food - uhm, ok.
Funny how all the other ratings are really good. Most of my friends love this place for their margaritas and I must say that I haven't tried them as of late. Their food is not my favorite though, sorry! Great service yes, and plan to wait if you're going to eat there during the weekend or Thurday and Friday night. My parents love the food - does that say something? Haha. - Unsubscribed , posted 08/27/04

Great cheap, greasy Mex grub
This is the perfect place if you're craving good, cheap Mexican grub and killer margaritas. - Charlie , posted 08/27/04

Go for the margs. Stay for the margs.
Arrange a ride home with someone who has not been drinking the margs. Tip the waitresses well. They rock. - , posted 08/14/04
