assholes for service people. - Unsubscribed , posted 04/20/08 |

I had been a fairly regular customer of this place, being a vegetarian and local. It was okay fare most days. But on April 17, 2008 my husband and I popped in for a late dinner and all the negative stuff I had heard about descended upon our table like harpies with pms. First of all, we were seated, given menus and water and then we waited. And waited. And waited. 20 minutes waited. No waiter. Nothing. Not a good sign. Waiter shows up, rambles off some stuff about soup du jour and disappears. For another 15 minutes. No drink order was taken. Nothing. He returns, finally, and we order. I order a rice paella, husband orders mac and cheese. We get food. Mac and cheese looks a tad well done, browned on the sides. I take note then take a bite of my food. It's bitter. The rice is burned. Burned rice is nasty. It permeates everything in the dish. The chantrelles tasted nasty. The other vegetables tasted nasty. The sauce had no flavor. The only thing I could distinguish in this dish was the Spanish olives. I only eat 4 bites. Awful. I decide to return the dish. There is a ruckus behind the counter. The maitre d' returns with my food. He says it's sofrito and it's supposed to be this way, I have to take the dish back. I say that I don't care what they told him to tell me, I don't like it, please take it away. A minute later the chef, Oatie, comes from around the counter. She gets down into my personal space, nose to nose and starts grilling me about my knowledge of Spanish cooking. She tells me that I don't know what I'm talking about and that the dish is sofrito. I tell her I don't care about sofrito, the rice is black and the dish is burned and I don't like it. She then calls me some insults and I say to her that I don't understand why she wants to fight with me (I get real loud here) I'M THE CUSTOMER. We immediately get the check, they insist on making us pay for all the food. We tell them we will never return. We won't. There is no excuse for forcing a customer to eat something they don't like. There is no excuse for ego wanting to be right instead of making right. They had ample opportunity to make the situation right with us and instead this maniac decided to pick a fight. Makes me wonder why this place is still in business. - terri , posted 04/20/08 |

What the hell are people talking about on here? "Belongs on the west side?" "Better off going across the street to Casa Bianca?" Please! You should be glad Fatty's is in cozy ol' Eagle Rock. And don't even get me started on Casa Bianca. Their pizza is alright, but just try getting your hands on one. Seriously! Their phone is constantly busy, there's constantly a line down the block to get in, and THAT place has got some serious attitude. Speaking of which, why are people claiming Fatty's has a bad attitude? Whatever, they have all been very friendly to us when we go there, including the owner. This restaurant rocks. The food is FANTASTIC. Everything is vegetarian, everything is superb. Try the Far East Noddle (sic) or the delicious pizza. I will admit that the name turned me off initially, and they are a little expensive. But my advice is, get over it and live a little. This place is worth every nickel. They're that good. - Orville , posted 01/02/08 |

the food was really tasty--a little pricey, but i sure cleaned my plate! everything sounded so delicious, it was hard to make a decision. I like the space as well . . a little more elegant than your typical veggie restaurant. i didn't personally encounter the kooky manager or rude wait-staff, but i could spot 'em ;) no matter--my date and i will be back again soon! - Rebecca , posted 08/07/07 |

Personally my wife and I find Fatty's a little over priced. I know most of the reviews here are negative (mostly dealing with the staff I guess?) but I think there are much better restaurants down the street. This place kind of belongs on the west side- and not among an artist community like eagle rock. - Stan , posted 04/02/07 |

I’ve recently gone back to Fatty’s and I still find it the most innovative vegetarian restaurants around Los Angeles. Their cuisine shows a creativity to satisfy every palate with a variety of dishes from various parts of the world. French, Creole and other cultures are quickly noticeable influences, but you can just choose from a variety of truly delicious pizzas. The meals are satisfying even to the greatest carnivores. Fresh mint for the mojitos and other fresh herbs come from the garden in the back which they’ve recently added and furnished with comfortable stuffed patio furniture. The decor respects the architecture of the building that has made of it a landmark without ever competing with the food that is the star here. Altogether the atmosphere is classy and casual without ever being stuffy while the service is unobtrusive yet attentive making you want to come back over and over. - florence , posted 08/13/07 - florence , posted 08/13/07 |

I can tell you that it is one of the best restaurants in LA. I often eat meat and sometimes have a difficult time at some vegetarian restaurants that always leave something for me to desire. I have never had that feeling at Fatty's as satisfying as I have found their food. The menu is extremely imaginative, reflecting something for every taste. The eclectic music lends an exotic atmosphere while the food reflects an international influence from Italian, French, Creole, etc. The staff was extremely hospitable, tending to my needs and those of my guests without ever being obtrusive. They were attentive when needed, but disappeared almost as if on cue to respect our privacy. I highly recommend Fatty's for a trip around the world right in our backyard in Eagle Rock and judge for yourself. - Jean , posted 04/01/07 |

Well, there's a reason why it always seems a bit sullen and empty in Fatty's. While eating there this evening, I actually discovered a nail in my pizza. Adding serious insult to injury, I was confronted by a frankly robotic and evasive manager who offered little in the way of an apology. In the end she did acquiesce and refund the price of that entree, but it was just an awful experience. This place has no class. You're better off getting a pizza across the street at Casa Bianca. - Matthew , posted 03/29/07 |

This may be the best vegetarian food I have *ever* had. Atmosphere was odd -- by which I mean the decor, which is sparse and seems somehow a little "unfinished" -- but the waiter was fine. Not particularly friendly, but not some kind of jerk either, as has been the experience of others here (although I went pretty late and the place wasn't super full, so maybe things are worse when they're packed). Food came promptly. The portions were large, filling and *freaking delicious*. And I'm not even a vegetarian. - Rico , posted 02/08/07 |

Her name is Kim Dingle, as in the berry. She's an "artist" and feels that a severe 'tude shows that she is creative. She is payed way too much money to create disturbingly bad art, and the motivation is carried over into her eatery. She actually thinks it's funny, even though if someone treated her the way she treats the customers, she'd probably call the police. She also is very proud of her sullen and moody staff. They're supposed to be really "cool". I used to go there, but once had a little talk with several of her staff at another venue, and no longer find her childish behavior at all cute. She's rude, obnoxious and a trouble maker. She even enjoys causing trouble with her own employees. She thinks the competition makes them work harder. The food is ok, but don't expect to fill up, just to empty your wallet. I won't even walk past the sidwalk, for fear that Ms Dingle De Berry may go psycho on someone. Go to Swork, they're much nicer, and they know IT'S ONLY COFFEE!!!!!!! - Brian , posted 01/15/07 |

I've eaten at Fatty's probably five or six times, and haven't ever had problems with the service or management such as described in the below reviews. The food is fantastic, as is the ambience. - Lexicon , posted 12/28/06 |

The last I looked which was December 06, Fattys was a fine dining, dinner only, full service restaurant that offered about TWENTY completely delicious Vegan dishes. Some were small plate tapas and the rest were entrees with soup or salad included(how often do you see that?) The rest of their menu is vegetarian. Though I am vegan, my freinds always share a fondue because its artisan cheese from farmsteads , rennet free. The quality is outstanding. From where I sit. these people seem to care deeply about what they are doing for the animals. Our server ( who was excellent ) told us that all the servers, owners and chefs are vegan and or vegetarian. I love thus place! - ana , posted 12/28/06 |

There is a strange vibe in this place, and is it me or is there cheese on everything? Even though I liked the vegan pizza my partner and I took it off the list after we saw the hostess bullied. - Paul , posted 06/08/06 |

Fatty's is a good restaurant, yes, but i refuse to support it because of their terrible management. the owners are as nutty as the previous reviews have described, and it's rather sad that it's the only restaurant of its kind in the area. think of the owners as george w, putting on the show to save face but neglecting the help. there was even an occasion where one of the servers got into a verbal argument with one of the owners that resulted in a physical confrontation. if you must eat here, take your food to go. it's not worth the bad vibe. - AW , posted 05/23/06 |

sure these reviews are scary, and we almost didn't go. But holy cow, we had such a good experience. We were gun shy and ready to run when we first arrived (due to below) but...since we had an adorable friendly server, amazing food, fantastic wine and a yummers dessert, we were so glad we did. I think we interfaced with the manager too, she was lovely to us. The place was completely full too, but again, fantastic time. So, go anyway. Hopefully you'll have a great experience too. - Jane , posted 03/15/06 |

I can not recommend this place to any normal person who expects to be treated with courtesy and respect. My wife and I tried this restaurant 3 times and just don't understand the hostile attitude here. The first time we went, the food was okay, but the service and attitude was a bit weird (almost hostile) and did not make us feel comfortable or welcome. We joked to each other when we left -- "Hey - do I have bad breath??" "Have I got the wrong outfit on", "Did I say something?" We kind of laughed it off and thought that maybe they were just having an off night. The next time we went we knew it wasn't us. We saw an argument erupt between the burly hostess and a couple who had just arrived because they had asked if they could sit at one of the empty tables in the front, by a window. She, the hostess/owner? got really irate and said that if the back room, where she planned to seat them, was not good enough, she did not care if they stayed. Understandably, the couple left. As they walked out she stood by the door and glared at them. Boy, if looks could kill... We finished our dinner but decided to have our coffee and dessert at Beaujolais down the street. We didn't particularly want to try Fatty's a third time, but some friends, who recently moved away, were visiting and wanted to go there because they are vegetarian and had once had a decent experience there. They said "How bad can it be?" Well, now they know. Here's what happened that night: The four of us had been seated and were waiting to order when we heard the gentleman at the next table explaining to his waitress that his party had waited for their dinner for nearly an hour and had just received it - cold. She just looked at him without saying anything and then walked away. He called her over again and she acted very harassed and refused to come over, saying to him from across the room, that she was busy. A few minutes later the burly, angry woman with a baseball cap (I am pretty sure that she is the owner) came charging over to their table and started laying into the guy and telling him off for harassing her and her waitress. Everyone in the room could hear her. The other 3 people at the table looked shocked. (we were shocked too, because we thought the gentleman had been polite.) He asked the owner to calm down, told her that they were leaving and asked for the check. She did not calm down, but continued the abuse. Needless to say, this was not pleasant. We decided to leave, since we hadn't ordered yet or even been given menus and as we walked out, we were shot the long evil eye from the "Fatty" in the baseball cap. When we got to the car, my friend said "What the bleeping hell was that all about?" Anyway, something good came of it because we decided to try Camilo's Restaurant, down the street, that night and had a beautiful meal in a lovely setting for the same money as Fatty's - the pretentious coffee shop. We now eat at Camilo's regularly and I must say that we enjoy excellent food and service there, consistently. - e , posted 01/31/06 |

I liked it when it was a more informal "order at the register" place. Now it's a sit down table service restaurant. As if it wasn't snobby before! We ate there and my friend bought magazine from the rack. They give you a little flag so that they know you bought it. Well the waitress didn't see the flag and almost grabbed it from my friend. He promised he paid for it and she says "Well I will go check and see if you did." What attitude! I was so embarrassed. I have cravings for the Elvis Parsley all the time, but can't bring myself to sponsor that kind of rudeness. - Ryan , posted 05/16/05 |

Fatty's DOES have great food, yes, some of it is just FABU, but the owners are not very nice indeed. I was LAMBASTED because I got a coffee to go, and there was some discrepency over how much MILK I should have in my own coffee, and I was accused of trying to get a latte at a coffee price. I though the woman with the bushy hair and tiny glasses, whom I later found out was the owner, acted in an EXTREMELY childish manner, as if she was doing me a favor by allowing me to purchase her coffee. She does NOT like students, which is the word around Oxy, NOT cool. I later said IT"S ONLY COFFEE !!!!!!! - Jamison , posted 01/10/05 |

We live right around the corner from this eatery and my human loves it! She always gets the Fatty's Salad to go and her boyfriend has even recreated a home version of it with salmon. My only beef is that there is no beef and cats need animal protein, so I never get any treats when the humans eat there. - Unsubscribed , posted 11/19/04 |

Great casual veggie place in Eagle Rock, on Colorado. I've tried the fondue (for 2), mac, cheese & veggies, lemon beer & a chocolate dessert. Everything has been tasty! - zenutopia , posted 11/18/04 |

Fatties is the place to be. I like to take all my vegan and vegetarians here to eat and chat. They have a huge magazine rack on the side, but you'd have to buy one to read one. It's all good though, cause their magazines have substance. It's not the general fashion/tabloid/teenybopper mag you see everywhere else. I recommend going to Fatties during the day when it's bright and sunny. It's the perfect place for brunch. - M , posted 11/01/04 |

Fatty's located near Eagle Rock features primarily vegetarian dishes. A garage was turned into a casual diner/vegetarian/coffee house. The Fatty's has a stable menu as well as a specials board which changes daily. They usually have a pizza, salad, and soup which changes daily. Their dessert display is quite daunting since they have so much to offer. The carrot cake is still one of my favorites as well as the Fatty duck, which is a shot of espresso with a scoop of vanilla gelato. They also offer a delicious dessert fondue which is available only on the weekends in the evening. - Vu , posted 09/03/04 |
