good shop with great prices and excellent selection
i'm a big fan and connoisseur of used bookstores. i've been to some of the best and biggest in LA, NY, SF, Berkeley, and select gems in smaller markets. gene dechene's is my favorite in LA. prices are very reasonable, with better quality books around 1/2 cover, though older or more used editions are cheaper. plus there's a good turnover, and i think a lot of loyal customers that keep a good selection of books in circulation.

my favorites are philosophy (until i picked it clean!) and psychology - but the fiction, nature and women's studies stuff is good too.

samantha is also really fair with trades - you get a really good deal, unlike at most of the other used stores in the area... - John , posted 01/12/05

yes to the above.....
.....& samantha is a really nice person too.

as an aside, good guess is that all the people who go to ucla & dont end up amazoning their books bring 'em here, so you get a GOOD selection of academic trade.

books, that is. - °º¤ø edi ø¤º° , posted 12/19/04

The Best Little Used Bookstore in LA
I've been to alot of bookstores in my day, and this is my all time favorite. Samantha and her mother run and exceptional shop right down the street from me, and for awhile I was thoroughly addicted to their metaphysics shelves.

The shop has a really cool history that you can read about there, and has survived as a fantastic literary stronghold for decades.

I always seem to find what I need there, and Samantha really knows her trade. First editions, rarities, all properly priced and placed. A true gem for those that love the smell of aging paper... - atom , posted 11/03/04
