poor people$ medical
Decades ago the Fear of being lost in County General in L.A., takining up residence wait in the halls or put away in the 'Psych ward' probably kept me alive better than if I had to go there again. I cannot imagine what it is like Now with less funding & more people for medical services for the poor. Our General Hospital was closed last year in SLO County.
True story though of going to a private hospital is that I was taken by friends Dying of probably the initial respiratoy/throat illness that has retired me early from life now to a good private Hospital in the Hollywood/LA area just weeks after my job/company had gone under & days after the insurance lapsed! I was running 106 + degrees fever & couldn't communicate well. The ER Dr on hand told my friends to take me (the hippie girl) to County as he didn't think I would make it through the night & He didn't want to be responsible for my death!!! I mean doc! that is a death sentence to send me to the labrynths of county general>>^^^<<<^^^<<<?
I panic'd ccz I thought in my delerium he was saying to commit me to the Psych Wards there so my friends fabulously asked what if anything they could do, he gave them a script & they took me home & iced me & alcohol rubs & here I am still.

But I too have been caught by our countrys systems net for my older chronic ill health problems & compared to the care my friends with beauceau bucks & insurance get - it's comparable or better. Granted some of the offices are sleazy, the Drs are overworked or detached, but Damn! I could not have paid for the doctoring or the insurance to cover it all. I wish I could be fabulously wealthy but they stand in line at the drugstore too for their perscriptions & pay more per, & probably have a lot less knowing of what they are taking & what it's doing to their bodies. Being Poor has its advantages; if you really want to get well it Forces you to learn more & find other solutions. That is how I got into studying herbs, then nutrition, supplements & all their affects on my Emotional system before even my bodys systems~~~~~~~~~~;>}} - Gi Gi , posted 03/15/06

now wait a minute
I followed their screening program, qualified for the assistance based on my annual income(poverty level) and had my wizdom teeth pulled for $20.00.

So, you can't just walk in and expect 5 star treatment at a public assistance facility.

Granted if you aren't dripping with blood from a gunshot wound they won't take you in emergency either. And with psychological problems it's even more difficult.

Great place if you smash your finger

But when you do get treatment, it's pretty reasonable - aLi , posted 03/14/06

LA Harbor/ UCLA
I have not had any help from any private services, for many years.
This is the only hospital left, in the whole of all of L.A, that will even see people off the street.
Thanks to the corrupt goings on at Drew Medical.
Yes, it is a bit much. But when you need help you DO get it.
From the very same doctors and techs from the private UCLA.
Difference is the wait. Sometimes weeks, months, or years. Depends on the woe.
Very frustrating when you are sick, TODAY.
But, I have gone through all the same steps as everyone else, waiting, and they have really helped me.
Over the course of four years and two surgeries later.
My mom has had less for more at Kaiser.
I am thankful every time they schedule me an appointment.
Sorry they make you wait.
The old Gov. is trying to shut this one down, too!
Then what?? - gayle ! , posted 03/14/06

If you were suicidal before you went in, they just might finish you off here...
Oh God(dess), please help us! The state of public healthcare surely is making "social darwinism" a reality. I went in suicidal and found myself trying to cut my wrists open in the bathroom with a plastic butter knife. This place will NOT make you better!

UCLA's neuropsychiatric institute in Westwood is a great place to get better if you are suffering from a psychiatric disorder. However, they will not comp your stay there unfortunately, if you don't have health insurance.

You are better off asking your friends to come over hold vigil for you rather than checking into LA Harbor/UCLA in Torrance, though. That place is a dump and the psychiatrists were assholes.

I'M SPECIFICALLY TALKING ABOUT THE PSYCH WARD! NOT SURGERY CENTER OR ANYTHING ELSE, GAYLE AND ALI! - Unsubscribed , posted 03/14/06
