Soup of the GODS!
This place has the BEST carrot soup. It's creamy like a bisque with a dollop of cojita cheese and terrific subtle spices. To DIE for!
They also have amazing chiles. We normally order the tres chiles. Three of their signature chiles, each completely different in taste: sweet and nutty, spicy red sauce all of them great!
This is also the only place in the L.A. area where we go for goof mole sauce... Cocoa and spice.
Highly reccomend it. Angel is the server and he's always smiling. It's getting to the point where we walk through the door and he tells the back to get two bowls of soup ready. :) - RyantheMighty , posted 04/03/06

Don't tell anyone!
<D'oh!> Too late! La Cabanita has been our little secret for so long. I can't say enough great things about the food. It may be a little more crowded, now, however... Try the Sopes Compuestos! - Slade , posted 10/15/04

One of the best Mexican restaurants in LA.
This place is a find! Tucked up there in Montrose, CA just north of Glendale the food is far superior to most Mexican restaurants. The freshest ingredients with a full bar and homemade corn tortillas. Their red salsa is so yummy, with bits of charred tomato, I could chug it from the bowl. The veggie tostadas come on the thinnest, crispest corn tortillas with black beans, thick grated carrots, lettuce and queso fresco. Simple and divine! - Catherine , posted 09/12/04

Home Made Mexican Food - Fresh and Cheap
This little restaurant in Montrose that doesn't take resos is always a treat. I shouldn't even tell you about it but I only go every couple months since it's a bit of a haul for me (but worth it). You get what I would call gourmet mexican food with freshness right down to the salsas and creme fraiche instead of sour cream. For a great sampler try the Sopes Compuestos (3 sopes each with different toppings). My mouth is watering just thinking about it. They serve beer and wine and have killer Mango Margaritas (made with Wine). - K.C. , posted 09/01/04

The Chuelettas to die for
LA has tons of mexican restaurants so finding one that stands out isn't easy. And when one does, it is usually because of a few distinctive traits. La Cabanita, in the foothills of Montrose [3447 N Verdugo Rd Glendale, CA 91208 Phone: (818) 957-2711] offers a great atmosphere, delightful service (if sometimes flakey), solid margs, and very reasonable prices (especially their lunch specials). But what sets this place apart is the chips & brown sauce (sorry! don't know whats in it, but you'll want to take some home), the authentic style soups, and the pork chops (Chulettas). These babies are cooked to an ethereal tenderness and served in a divine sauce that melts in your mouth:
