Sherman Oaks Vet. Clinic helped save my cat's life!
I know SOVC can be VERY busy, so sometimes the care is rushed. But, I think that is more about the support staff. They are also a bit high-priced, at times. But, their Doctors offewr excellent care. My cat, Zoe was going to another Vet for crystals in his ueine. He had a cathater inserted several times to empty his bladder. The last time he went to a previous Vet, he came home with a urinary infection and almost died. I took him to Sherman Oaks Vet, on a referral from a neighbor. They immediately diagnosed his problem, gace him antibiotics and an IV. Then, then told me he needed a life-saving surgery as soon as possible. They referred me to the West LA Animal Clinic and Hospital. The surgeon there wasn't even sure that Zoe would live, since his condition had gotten so bad. She performed the surgery and he came back better than ever. - Joan , posted 04/11/08

Another dissatisfied former customer
Interestingly, I stumbled across this site out of frustration in dealing with what used to be a good facility. So, it’s not surprising to me that the positive reviews from several years ago totally contradict the recent ones.

The current staff are useless and careless...particularly the goth girl at the counter with the major chip on her shoulder.

Aside from that small detail, my ailing cat was misdiagnosed leading to what I believe was an avoidable loss of his eyesight due to detached retinas. Even if that were not the case, the "doctor" was careless, detached and I really didn't appreciate her flip attitude. Not to mention she didn't even consult my cats recent medical records or attempt to find out why his eye is now clouding up.

I took the advice of another reviewer here and took my cat to the VCA clinic in WLA and I am so thankful for that information. The staff, doctor and doctors’ assistant were all attentive, caring and thorough, something sorely lacking at SOVC. In addition, I discovered that the medication prescribed by SOVC was an excessive dosage, causing my cat to be listless and wouldn’t eat for 2 days.

If you really care about your pets’ well being, avoid SOVC. The extra distance to VCA - not to mention the lower cost - is well worth it.

waste of time & money
Don't get ripped off by these con artists. they talk out of both sides of their mouth to get your money.
Watch out! Get detailed instructions and GET price quotes before your pet disappears for UNNEEDED testes and lots of bills. I have been told that the inflated bill was because a quote is only a quote, not the real bill. - Jerri , posted 08/19/07

Misled, Injured my dog, don't take responsibility for poor care and charge a lot anyway!
The vet who recommended our dog have leg surgery also urged us to bring him there for boarding during the healing process. He allowed our dog to be put into a run even though he strictly instructed us not to allow our dog to run or jump. When the dog was injured and he felt he couldn't handle the situation, he did NOT call our emergency contact number. We returned from our trip to find our dog limping badly. We don't know if our dog will need another surgery now or be cripped for life. Then, they sent us a bill for extra charges anyway. After a lengthly conversation with the Vet, he never took any responsibility for what we consider to be very negligent and harmful care to our pet. - onlineFred , posted 07/15/07

It's all about the Money!!!!
After 20 years of being a dedicated customer, it was time to say goodbye. I have had good experiences in the past, but since our cat was diagnosed with diabetes in January, this facility clearly showed their incompetence and recklessness. The smartest thing they did was finally throw in the towel with our cat and recommended we go to VCA in West L.A. Since then, our cat has never been better. I can also tell you that by comparison, VCA’s charges were much less than what Sherman Oak Vet charged for BG curves. I will never go back to SOVG. And furthermore, they should stop ripping people off!!!

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE
My cat was crying in his litter box and appeared to be constipated so I took him there. The vet gave him an enema and admitted he couldn't get out all of the stool, then slapped me with a $600 bill and sent my cat home w/me. I noticed my cat couldn't turn his head w/o turning he entire upper body so they must have been pretty rough w/him. A few days later my cat was back in his litter box crying so i called the vet and he told me to call an animal psychologist. My cat became so plugged up I had to bring him to an emergency clinic which was terrific. They kept him overnight and performed tests to rule out other things. They told me my cat was very dehydrated and put him on an IV. The entire bill was almost $2,000 and I learned there was nothing wrong w/him except for being plugged up. They sent my cat home with a prescription stool softener and my cat was fine after that. In conclusion, I spent $600 at Sherman Oaks, then $2,000 at the emergency vet hospital only to learn that Sherman Oaks was negligent in not giving me that stool softener mediciation. If they had done that I would be $2,000 richer. - Fred , posted 04/17/07

on the expensive side, but excellent service
Sherman Oaks Veterinary Clinic is more expensive than other vets in the area, but the quality oif medical care is outstanding. Over the past 15 years we've had a couple of very sick pets with difficult to diagnose problems. The owner, Dr. Richter, was able to diagnose and save both anilmals.

The staff at the clinic is very friendly, and they alway treat our pets with kindness and great care. We will continue to take our pets there even though it's a little more expensive than other vets in the area. - Tom , posted 07/04/06

Incompetent,Extreme Rip Off,
The Sherman Oaks Veterinary clinic is all about making money and adding as much charges on your bill as possible. They take advantage of you and waste your money on unneccessary meds and procedures. This vet clinic is a money making machine racket. They are more concerned about keeping the cash register busy than anything else. The employees are all rushed and preoccupied.I guess they are under pressure to make sales and bill you as much as possible regardless if your animal needs treatment or not.The employees dont have much genuine sincerity and are pretty cold.Nobody has time to talk to you much because time is money and they need to nail the next client. This is an ethically challenged business-big time. The doctors rarely can give an accurate diagnosis and will just keep prescribing 1 useless medication and procedure after another. They can never give us an explanation as to what is ailing the animal just a guess.Worse they cannot explain why the previous diagnosis was wrong. The doctors are incompetent.
If you have lots of money to waste and risk your animals welfare then go directly to them otherwise avoid this money making racket operation like the plague!
They will not give discounts on cash. They will keep your animal if you are missing 20 bucks on a 250$ service. They are tight, cheap skin flints. They want all the cash upfront even if youve been a 10 yr client. It is sickening how cheap and money grubbing they are.
We once brought our animal in the morning and were to pick up the animal in the afternoon. The employees forgot to get the cash up front but called us an hour later scolding us for not paying on the spot.We will never ever use them again. They do not provide good care for seriously sick animals, they are very cold, they bill as much as possible .
Their primary goal is to get your money and as much as possible.I am sure everybody there works on COMMISSIONS. - don , posted 06/21/06

Best Vet in LA
I first went to them as they've earned approval from AAHA - very high standard to get their approval.

I've loved every vet there and they've taken excellent care of my cats. Last year, I boarded them for the first time in their lives (one is 15!) and the staff was so compassionate to me as I was calling daily to check on him.......

I wouldn't trust my cats to anyone else in LA - Kara , posted 11/16/04

Caring Veterinary
I've been taking my two cats to these guys after using another, more disappointing vet, and I've been super happy with their knowledge, skill and care with my animals.

One of my cats had to go through some incredible operations due to urinary tract disease [not merely infection] and I simply couldn't afford the prices but my expression to them that I was willing to do and pay for whatever it took to save my cats life and they did everything to help me do that. I won't get into the details but they were extremely sensitive to my financial plight and two years later, my cats still alive and happy as ever. - Ranxerox , posted 09/10/04

Recommendation
I take all of mine to Sherman Oaks Veterinary clinic.
How is Max now Tim? Did he get over his cold? Is that what it was? Give Max Cat a kiss for me. He's the greatest. - Unsubscribed , posted 05/22/04
