Sivananda Yoga - a good authentic yoga center
Sivananda Yoga is not fancy, does not suggest you need any yoga "gear" and does not bombard you with commercialized yoga ways. If you are looking for a practice that focuses on the essentials of yoga (breathing, diet, asanas, chants, community, meditation) then try Sivananda first before visiting the multitude of yuppie yoga places around L.A. The first class is free and they do have a more down-to-earth, spiritual approach than most places. Costs are minimal and I believe they have a discount twice a year during the summer and winter seasons. If you enjoy the practice, pay the annual membership fee ($29) and if you happen to purchase classes (i.e. 10-class pass) during the discount, classes can be had for around $8 a session; otherwise, non-members pay $12 a class. Namaste.

The spiritual strength behind the Center are the teachings of Swami Sivananda. These teachings are a synthesis of all the formal doctrines of Yoga. He authored more than 300 books on Yoga and Vedanta Philosophy. He trained many exceptinoal disciples in Yoga and Vedanta - among them Swami Vishnu-devananda.
In 1957 Swami Sivananda sent Swami Vishnu-devananda to spread the practice of Yoga in the West. Swami Sivananda summarized his teachings in the following words:
"Serve, Love, Give, Purify, Meditate, Realize"
The Centers were founded in 1959 by Swami Vishnu-devananda as a non-profit organization whose purpose is to propagate the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta as a means of achieving physical, mental and spiritual well-being and Self-Realization.
Swami Vishnu-devananda was a World renowned authority on Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. He was also the author of the bestseller "The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga". He also wrote "Meditation and Mantras" and other books.
