always interesting
This is one of the few live music venues I'll go to in LA. the crowd is generally pretty cool and lacking in pretention. they're not their because it's hip, but because they love the music, and that makes it more enjoyable for everyone. - Nickkie , posted 12/16/05

Great Club
Terrible area, but a great club. Worth going just for the atmosphere, regardless of who or what is playing. - Global , posted 09/10/04

Great All Ages Venue in Downtown LA
I've been to many a great show at the Smell. Everyone from Xiu Xiu, Milemarker, Deerhoof, Blood Brothers and other experimental bands have played here.

All shows are usually $5 and all ages. In the past they have been lenient about their no-alcohol policy, but they have been enforcing it more often lately.

Be sure to get here a little early since it's a little hard to find and parking is a bitch. But other than that it's a great time to be had. - James , posted 09/09/04

the best place to hear music in Los Angeles
The smell is an all ages venue that is NOT a rock club and NOT a bar. But it has a nice sound system (when it's all working), a great stage, a great view, and the best people in the world in attendance.

As far as local bands go, you can see The Wives, Mika Miko, The Sharp Ease, Child Pornography, Systerectomy, The Mae Shi, 400 Blows and on and on, on a regular basis.

Then there are Ara's literary soirees, with experimental published poets from around the world.

National acts like Moving Units frequently stop by, and you might just catch a local classical musician like Kraig Grady opening up.

Jim Smith has put together an amazing room, where you won't find even the slightest stench of the entertainment industry.

Located in the alley between Second and Third streets in downtown LA, east of Spring, west of Main. - steve , posted 09/01/04
