it's aldines. ira's a nut.
okay, it is not a BAD bookstore. but, you know, i was a bookdealer for a billion (nearly) light years so i know the inner workings of a lot of the used bookdealers (pun definitely intended) & shops in the city.
aldines (a little to the east on hollywood from vermont, a little to the west of soap plant/la luz) is where it lies. it is filled to the rafters & beyond the rafters & there is a lot of crxp in there, as well as a lot of interesting things. this is a used bookshop out of the past-- meaning, it is completely crowded, sometimes the categories dont make sense, you can literally choke on the dust (it hasnt been cleaned in decades. literally), but often things that one does not expect are there can be found inside --somewhere--. or maybe they are in the storage warehouse wherein ira is rumored to sleep, & can be gotten for you next day.
my only warning re this place is that ira is a real neocon nut. DONT TALK POLITICS w/ this man unless you want to get a long & tiresome earful of crazed neoconservatism from a Jew whose parents were communists. as a Jew whose parents (okay, father. my mother was just a pinko) were communists, i can not only make the above statement, i can almost verify that this as 50+ years of parental rebellion in the making, which has finally flowered into absolute nutcase hood.
dont get me wrong-- he is not a -mean- person. just-- dont talk politics. you will never be allowed to leave the store. you will be put in invisible chains until you submit.
you note though that i gave it 4 stars. while i suspect (quite righteously, as they say) that this shop like so many other used bookshops is at least supported in part by parental help or inheritance (there is NO money in used books any more & it has gotten worse), i will give the man that he has often got some interesting things.
for a 5 star shop you would have to travel further-- cliff's on colorado in pasadena. possibly the best shop in l.a. (i KNOW they have a warehouse full of the interesting & they also have a "collectibles" room wherein nobody can go w/o an escort. & the stuff is GOOD. counterculture too)--
if you dont want to travel that far & are in the neighborhood, aldine's is fine. also check counterpoint up on franklin & if you want to go to glendale, brand on, uh, i think, brand.
