dark, surreal, enigmatic. in a word: GODARD
here's the skinny:
there's a dick named lemmy caution who arrives in alphaville, a futuristic city on another planet, for reasons we're not quite sure of. while there, he befriends natasha von braun, daughter of the very doctor who constructed the alpha 60 machine that controls the planet's inhabitants w/ logical rhetoric and drug-induced brainwashing. outlaws caught expressing degrees of emotion are publically executed either by gunfire atop a swimming pool diving board or via electrocution whilst sitting down to enjoy a nice flick at the cinema.
this film has it all: science fiction, aka man vs. technology; romance: man rescues woman from evil; comedy re: the nonsensical teachings of alpha 60 which are oh-so akin to basically philosophy/religious banter of any kind; dramatic (obviously) and best of all... it's in french!
basically i adore this film b/c it feels warm & fuzzy on my brain when i watch it. there's quite a lot of symbolism thrown in which i'm sure is partly there for exploration and also partly there for kicks. that's what i love about dada.
to take this film seriously would be defeatist. go w/ it. and i promise if you open up, your soul will say, "aaaaaaaaaaah."
bounce me back after you check it out & lemme know what YOU think!
